The CEO Becomes a System Architect

Operating an autonomous system changes the role of leadership. Instead of managing people—assigning tasks, checking status, resolving conflicts—the CEO designs workflows, defines rules, and structures decisions.

The job shifts from managing work to designing the system that produces the work. What are the handoffs? Where do humans intervene? What guards prevent drift? These are architectural questions. The CEO becomes a system architect.

It's a different skill set. Less about directing individuals, more about designing feedback loops, boundaries, and checkpoints that make the whole system reliable. The system does the work; the human shapes the system.
